Yo nací en Cataño,
Puerto Rico.
I was born in Cataño.
Cataño is a small but pretty town, full of people.
It is located very close to
Puerto Rico's capital city, San Juan. There are many beaches in Puerto
Rico, and the sun is very hot so the people are always at the beach.

San Juan, pronounced san HWAHN, is the capital
and largest city of Puerto Rico. It is also the island's chief seaport.
The older part of the city lies on an island off the northern coast of
Puerto Rico. Newer residential districts lie on the main island.
Four bridges and a highway over the water link these
sections. Trade, manufacturing, and government are the chief activities.
Some of the Spanish forts and the walls around the older part of the city
are over 250 years old. San Juan National HIstoric site, covering
48.25 acres, contains many of these fortifications. Morro Castle,
begun in 1539 and complete in the late 1700's, lies on a bluff at the entrance
to the bay which is one of the best harbors in the West Indies.

Early Civilization of Puerto Rico
The Ciboney were the first inhabitants
of Puerto Rico. They came from Cuba. They gathered food, fished
and they lived off the land. Remains of their culture have been found at
beaches and water areas. No arrowheads or weapons like that were found
so this shows they probably didn’t have iron or other metals. The Igneri
were the next to inhabit Puerto Rico. They came from Venezuela. The Igneri
left traces of their culture behind by leaving multicolored pottery. In
1000 A.D, the Taino replaced the Igneri. The Taino were skilled engineers
and sailors who traded with other civilizations in the Americas. They farmed
the land and, basically, the only meat they ate was pork. Even though the
Taino were a peaceful people they were always at war with a neighboring
tribe called the Carib who had wiped out other civilizations and it seemed
they would wipe out Taino from Borinquen.
